Wat Ek Phnom Temple

Located about 11km from Battambang Wat Ek Phnom dates to the 11th century and is one of the most visited attractions around Battambang. If you have already seen Angkor Wat you'll possibly find this a bit of a disappointment but if you haven't then this is a fine taster.  At the weekends it is a popular spot for Khmers who visit the temple with picnics but during the week you might find yourself as the only visitor. There are some fine decorated lintels to be seen and one is free to clamber among the ruins.

The drive out to the temple passes through some beautiful countryside and is worth the trip alone. You will notice locals making rice paper (which is used for spring rolls), rice noodles and sticky bamboo rice. Just a short detour brings you to Psar Prohoc - the fishpaste market. Prohoc - essentially fermented fish - is a staple of the Cambodian diet and smells, well, quite unusual. It is not to everyone's taste but a visit to the market is well worthwhile as it is an unforgettable experience. A clothes peg for your nose might be handy!
